    Monday, October 7, 2019

    Presenter(s):
    Theresa Williamson, Catalytic Communities, Brazil

    Rio de Janeiro's favelas offer an exceptional laboratory from which to reflect on the nature of multi-generational self-built development of informal settlements, to consider what the world might learn from these settlements, the relationship of housing to belonging and sustainability, and to use this knowledge to create more flexible, adaptive, singularly diverse, creative and resilient cities—all qualities of informality that are conspicuously absent from most formal environments. Tools and divergent perspectives from Rio de Janeiro's Sustainable Favela Network where informal settlements are working to develop their own model of sustainability, built on their qualities and assets, will be presented.

    The workshop will engage the public in three activities designed to shatter their traditional thinking and renovate their perspectives on sustainable urbanism, to help them think outside their traditional disciplines and contexts, a necessary skill as we work together to develop the highly creative solutions we need moving forward.

    Ecocity Standards to support Locals Action for Healthy Communities: Focus on Sound Quality

    Presenter(s):

    Kirstin Miller, Ecocity Builders
    Maureen Connelly, British Columbia Institute of Technology
    Lee Beaulieu, Urban Design & Sustainability, City of Vancouver
    Steve Meszaros, RWDI consulting Engineers and Scientist
    Mayor Chiri Maharjan, Lalitpur, Neapl
    Maureen Wilhelm-Blanc, Ville de Montreal, Quebec

    Sound Quality is proposed as a new Bio-Geophysical Condition within the International Ecocity Framework. Participants will gain insights to how communities can be catalysts for climate action and balanced urban soundscapes that boosts quality of life and protects critical ecosystems. The workshop goal is to support the development of comprehensive indicators that are unique to Sound Quality.

    Presentation and discussion topics include:

    • How smart land-use decisions and building design effectively support Sound Quality, Clean and Renewable Energy, and Responsible Resources and Materials;
    • Prediction of the zero-carbon city soundscape— without masking today’s combustible engine road noise, will the public transit train and buskers pierce an ambience of urban tranquility?
    Background:

    At Ecocity World Summit, Melbourne 2017, the inclusion of Sound Quality in the International EcoCity Framework was proposed. The premise is that in and ecocity, citizens experience sound quality in buildings and outdoors that is conducive to good health. The overall rational is that reducing excessive noise levels will reduce disease, and exposure to the sounds of nature will support health. Furthermore, that an ecologically balanced soundscape will support a diversity of culturally unique sounds and ambient sonic backgrounds.

    Sound quality as a Bio-Geophysical Condition was evaluated within the Ecocity Framework for synergies with the four pillars of sustainability to advance the vision of ecologically-restorative sonic environments. This imperative standard adopts noise criteria from the World Health Organization for the Ecocity 1 benchmark. Principles of ambient soundscape analysis conceptualize the Gaia Level Ecocity. Literature and examination determined that no one single existing standard could appropriately host Sound Quality as a subset within its definition as the comprehensive series of indicators are unique to each existing definition and to Sound Quality. As such, Sound Quality will be an additional Bio Geophysical Condition for inclusion in the forthcoming revision of the International Ecocity Framework.

    15:30 - 17:55
    Monday, October 7, 2019
    BCIT Downtown Campus, Room 284

    Presenter(s):
    Dr. Vanessa Timmer, One Earth, Canada
    Dr. Lewis Akenji, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, Japan
    Ms. Anu Mänty, The Finnish Innovation Fund, Finland
    Mr. Markus Tehro, SITRA The Finnish Innovation Fund, Finland
    Ms. Nicole van den Berg, Utrecht University
    Sustainable lifestyles remains a political "hot-potato" issue, but also an inevitable part of creating ecocities. Although mainstreaming sustainable lifestyles is the essence of implementing the Paris Agreement on climate change and the UN Agenda 2030, there is little evidence that practical efforts and political gestures are based on a clear interpretation of what is needed to shift the dominant urban consumerist lifestyles.

    This interactive workshop brings together five international initiatives engaged in reframing our approaches to lifestyles as a key part of creating ecocities and sustainable societies: incorporating lifestyles options into the IMAGE global climate model, 1.5 Degree Lifestyles Report, SITRA Finnish Innovation Fund everyday living work, the Envisioning Sustainable Living Futures project, and the Beacon on Sustainable Living. Workshop participants explore this reframing including how science inputs into solutions design in order to shift our everyday lives to advance climate action, circular economy, and ecocities.

    {location}

    Presenter(s):
    Steven Peck, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, Canada
    James Klasesn, The Roofing Contractors Association of BC, Canada

    To be a successful part of urban policy initiatives – that is, to have a lasting impact on their urban environment – green roofs must be carefully and intentionally designed as a blend of a durable, leak-free platform and a well-designed, installed and maintained living vegetated system. Each of these – the roof platform and the vegetation it supports – must be built by trained professionals using proven materials installed according to clear, objective, evidence-based standards. Each must be independently reviewed for quality assurance during and after construction. And for quality assurance to be meaningful, both the platform roof and the vegetated assembly must be financially guaranteed.

    This session collaboratively explores the key components of a successful green roof program, including the standards that elevate both the roof platform and vegetated roofing beyond good to eminently successful. Additionally, participants will be introduced to the comprehensive training required for Green Roof Professional (GRP) accreditation.

    Presenter(s):
    James Boothroyd, Ecocity Builders, Canada
    Kirstin Miller, Ecocity Builders, United States

    Cities everywhere need to engage many more residents in support of the behavioural and systemic changes needed for ecocities. This workshop will bring together leaders of six successful citizen-led projects from Africa and the Americas—and 50 delegates—to explore how local decision-makers can free-up citizens to experiment in building more socially just, ecologically sustainable cities. The workshop will be informal, interactive and enjoyable, with elements of PechaKucha (concise presentations by project leaders) and speed-dating (leaders interact directly for short periods with small groups of participants).

    Facilitated by James Boothroyd, co-author of Project Green Bloc, and Kirstin Miller, Executive Director of Ecocity Builders, this session should be of interest to local government decision-makers, planners, grant-makers, community groups and activists.

    Workshop #10 IS CANCELLED.
    15:30 - 17:55
    Monday, October 7, 2019

    Presenter(s):
    Meg O'Shea, Vancouver Economic Commission, Canada

    Conventional metrics for measuring economic prosperity such as GDP and unemployment communicate a limited perspective on a region’s economic wellbeing. To better understand the complexity of economic wellbeing and community resilience, alternative visions of economic prosperity should be considered and potentially integrated to form a comprehensive and meaningful picture of a community’s strengths and needs. Indicators drawn from indigenous worldviews, health and wellness research, faith-based leadership, social innovation practices, the labour movement, entrepreneurship, and resilience theory and practice all offer alternative visions of economic prosperity. This workshop facilitates a friendly exchange of views and explores potential common ground that may exist between conventional and alternative visions of prosperity. For municipal decision-makers, theEcoCties of the future will require sophisticated and multi-dimensional metrics that capture the experience of all residents and reveal opportunities for intervention that will provide equitable benefits to residents.

    Given the spread of misinformation and the challenges in effectively communicating research on climate change and sustainable development to the wider public(s), it is crucial for research to make a difference. Research curation is a new method to communicate research outcomes online to diverse audiences, building upon contemporary museum practices as well as best practices in social media marketing. It combines internet communication technologies (ICT’s) with select curatorial and communication frameworks for a wider dissemination of research outcomes. Based on a new research curation best practices framework (publication forthcoming), this practitioner workshop will inform participants how to develop a digital communication strategy, how to conduct audience research, how to write social media content, and how to personalize their work. As museums have a long history of educating and engaging the public, we will also outline two useful museum frameworks that can enhance web communication practices. Given the volume of information available online, it is important to create a smoke signal around your research. This workshop will conclude with tips and tricks on how to reformat and present research outcomes into engaging and user-friendly media formats.

    Monday, October 7, 2019
    BCIT Downtown Campus, Room 551

    Presenter(s):
    Peter Laybourn, International Synergies Ltd, UK
    Timo Makinen, National Industrial Symbiosis Program Canada, Canada

    The National Industrial Symbiosis Program (NISP®) model creates financial benefits to businesses by establishing business-to-business synergies where ‘waste’ resources, such as materials, energy or water but also physical assets or expertise, from one or more business can be used by another to replace a virgin feedstock or even to support new product lines. The NISP® model eschews cumbersome waste audits, and instead uses a regional facilitation model. The NISP® model has been adapted to more than 30 countries worldwide, and has been endorsed by the EU Directorate General for the Environment, the OECD, WWF, and the G7-Alliance for Resource Efficiency. Participants will have the opportunity to see first hand how the NISP® model works via a participatory demo. At the close of the workshop, we will work through the process of establishing regional NISP® models.

    Wall Centre Central Park (Wall Centre) is a mixed-use residential development in Vancouver, British Columbia. It consists of two phases. Phase 1 contains 728 units and was made open to the public in 2017, while Phase 2 contains 332 units and was made open in 2018.

    Each phase incorporates a wastewater heat recovery system from SHARC Energy Systems, sized to provide a substantial portion of the water heating load at high efficiencies. The system can be designed to accommodate up to 100% of the water heating load. Phase 1 incorporates a SHARC 660 unit while Phase 2 implements two PIRANHA T10 units. These systems use heat from the buildings’ wastewater to heat incoming cold water and displace the need for natural gas. This helped to reduce the development’s energy demand and carbon footprint, thereby contributing to its LEED® Gold certification.

      Tuesday, October 8, 2019
      14:00 - 15:00
      Room 121 + 122, West Building, Vancouver Convention Centre

      Academic Keynote D: City Blue; A Personal Journey from Urban Stream Restoration to World Rivers Day

      In City Blue, renowned river conservationist and World Rivers Day founder, Mark Angelo, takes the audience on a visually stunning 5 decade global journey; one that explores the values of urban waterways, the pressures that confront them, along with inspiring conservation and restoration examples he has encountered, and been part of. As a paddler, Mark has traveled well over 1000 rivers spanning more than 100 countries - perhaps more than any other. And while Mark has descended the planet’s most remote waterways, he has also paddled though the heart of the world’s great cities.

      City Blue elaborates on how local ground-breaking urban stream restoration efforts helped inspire the creation of World Rivers Day, now one of the biggest environmental celebrations on the planet. Among Mark’s many accolades, he is a recipient of the Order of BC and the Order of Canada, his country’s highest honour, in recognition of his river conservation efforts both at home and abroad. Mark’s work has been the subject of major television specials, internationally acclaimed feature films, and Emmy award winning investigative news features. Mark retired as the long time head of the BCIT Fish and Wildlife Department and is Chair Emeritus of the BCIT Rivers Institute.

      Speaker:

      Workshop #13 Regenerative Relationships: An Interactive Workshop on Living Systems Engagement
      Learn More
      Tuesday, October 8, 2019
      10:15 - 12:40
      BCIT Downtown Campus, Room 280

      Presenter(s):
      James Godwin, DIALOG, Canada
      Lucas Ozols-Mongeau, DIALOG, Canada
      Emily Rennalls, DIALOG, Canada

      This session demonstrates a stakeholder engagement exercise that uses the approach of ‘Regenerative Design.’ Regenerative design aims to foster a co-evolution between all living systems in the development of our built and natural environments. The approach allows design teams – whether Planners, Architects, or beyond – and stakeholders to consider the breadth of the ecological community affected by our actions, and to improve the quality of beneficial relationships formed by any enterprise. This interactive exercise will outline a process of role-playing within a speculative project to better inform future decisions towards the holistic benefit of all living systems. It will introduce an engagement process that will challenge participants to step beyond their point of view and assume the attitudes, needs and values of a variety of biotic stakeholders within a given site. The session is relevant to all attendees whether engaged in private practice, municipalities, education, NGOs, or in advocate roles.”

      Presenter(s):
      Rohan Lilauwala, Green Infrastructure Foundation, Canada

      The benefits of green infrastructure (like urban trees, rain gardens, and green roofs) are well known, but difficult to value. This difficulty creates an obstacle, where green infrastructure is often not considered when making important investment and asset management decisions. The goal of this workshop is to help participants value the benefits provided by green infrastructure in their communities, improve decision-making, and recognize the potential for savings and revenue from green infrastructure's wide range of benefits.

      Olga Petrov, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Canada
      Deirdre Lynch, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Canada
      Amir Dehkhoda, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Canada

      The objective of this workshop is to inform on characteristics, applications and impacts of biomass. Discussions will focus on advantages of introducing biomass as renewable energy source in cities and industry in terms of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction and subsequently, possible climate change solution. Attendees will learn about applications such as clean, solid and other wood waste material conversions to heat and power for use in community-based district energy systems and industry environments.

      Furthermore, presentations will cover the use of biomass by-products such as biochar, with huge potential in different applications as renewable carbon materials. During the extensive discussion periods, attendees will with a help of workshop presents, develop a list of foreseen benefits and potential downsides of using biomass as a replacement of fossil fuels. This workshop will inform community and industry leaders on sustainable energy-related concepts, which they may consider to put into practice.

      WORKSHOP FORMAT

      PART A - CASE STUDIES: Following an initial framing presentation providing an overall of community planning approaches, with examples from Rio de Janiero of Catalytic Communities’ community-driven integration between informal and formal community planning (Theresa Williamson, CatComm), the speakers will share short presentations on case studies from Medellin, including on: (i.) the participatory engagement and use of citizen science in the development of a neighborhood sustainability plan (Sydney Moss, Ecocity Builders); (ii.) human-centered design as a methodology for innovative, community-focused problem solving to address complex urban challenges in the Moravia neighborhood, where informal houses were built on a formal landfill (Holly Pearson, Independent Planning Consultant); and (iii.) the pilot project on data integration for resilient cities for CODATA of the International Science Council, around the city-selected themes on the links between air quality, public health, urban green space and social and economic outcomes, which was conducted collaboratively with a range of actors, including the Ruta-N Medellin and the novel Medellin Data Council, an informal, voluntary group of data scientist stakeholders including ‘citizen scientists’, university researchers, civic tech entrepreneurs, community open data activists, and representatives from the municipality. (Stephen Passmore, Resilience Brokers). Followed by Q&A.

      PART B - BREAKOUT DISCUSSIONS: The session’s second half will include two rotations of breakout discussion groups, which will allow participants to identify and discuss community co-design approaches in their own geographical, community and institutional contexts around the themes of the case studies (e.g., citizen science, open data and systems thinking; human-centered design (HCD) methodologies and applications to community planning, urban design / master plans; community-led integration between informal and formal community planning through strategic communications and technology). Finally, the tables will report back to the group for a final discussion.

      Jeff Bloemink, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Canada
      Ali Palizban, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Canada

      The electrical power grid can be considered as one of the largest feats of engineering ever: hundreds of thousands of assets all interconnected must function harmoniously to provide a reliable source of electric power. Availability and reliability issues can result in major reductions in economic productivity, loss of critical services, or impact on quality-of-life. Generation by burning fossil fuels; a major source of green-house gas emissions and other pollutants, is still prevalent. The adoption of renewable energy resources is a solution to this problem that can meet increasing demand or replace existing conventional generation sources. To properly integrate these resources on a large scale, many issues must be overcome. This workshop will give attendees an overview of the electrical power grid, the challenges associated with renewable integration, and the opportunities we must achieve significant penetration of renewable energy resources worldwide. The content is targeted towards those without an engineering background.

      Field Trip #14 Metrotown and Metro Vancouver
      Learn More
      Tuesday, October 8, 2019
      15:30 - 17:55

      Presenter(s):
      Neal Carley, Metro Vancouver, Canada
      James Stiver, Metro Vancouver, Canada

      Metro Vancouver is often held up as a region with successful regional planning: a compact region with a network of dense, mixed-use, vibrant urban centres focused around frequent transit. However, municipalities often struggle with the expectation of higher density development in rapid transit locations in light of rising land and construction costs and the challenging outcomes for housing affordability. Studies have shown that lower income households, particularly renters, depend more on access to transit to reach jobs, education and other amenities day-to-day, but these groups often face involuntary displacement as properties are redeveloped, or can’t find affordable rental housing options near transit.

      Travel by SkyTrain to transit-oriented mixed-use neighbourhoods having recently experienced (or currently experiencing) significant redevelopment. Meet with developers and planners and learn about their experiences and the tools they use to make more transit-oriented affordable rental housing a reality. As a bonus, see the entire region from the 29th floor of Metro Vancouver’s head office.

      Learning Outcomes:
      • Participants will see types of development happening around rapid transit locations in Metro Vancouver.
      • Participants will learn about the challenges and struggles in preserving and increasing affordable rental housing near transit.
      • Participants will learn about new affordable rental housing projects and some of the tools that local governments and non-profit housing providers are using in the Metro Vancouver region.
      • Participants will learn about how green infrastructure is being integrated into community design to achieve environmental and fiscal goals.
